Hope and Despair IV

$3,500.00

(Varon, 2006) Inspired by the profound impact of Hurricane Katrina, this piece reimagines loss through the lens of movement, memory, and spirit. I envisioned the bodies in the ocean not only as victims of the storm, but as dancers, graceful and suspended, moving between worlds in a silent, mournful ballet. Their journey is guided by the yellow wings of angels, gently welcoming them into the spiritual realm.
In the distance, the faint silhouette of the city lingers on the horizon, both witness and ghost, a symbol of what was and what endured. I painted several versions of this vision, each one exploring the delicate balance between sorrow and resilience. I call them "Hope and Despair"—a tribute to lives forever changed, to spirits carried beyond, and to the quiet strength that rises from the depths of devastation.
