(Varón, 2018) The Red Hummingbird (“colibrí in Spanish), is intent on drawing nectar from a crimson, balloon-like blossom. It’s hovers in graceful focus; its wings a blur in devotion. Nearby, two smaller, yellow-chested birds offer a gentle contrast: one perches leisurely on a branch, while the other dances freely through the lush vegetation, savoring its flight. This was the view from my terrace when I lived in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. It was a daily spectacle of color and life. Behind the red colibrí, a dark semicircle suggests the curvature of the Earth itself, a reminder of our place within the vastness of this universe. Beyond that curve, the horizon unfurls in shimmering waves, revealing the timeless expanse of the Pacific Ocean.
