(Varón, 7/2025) My gateway-inspired paintings delve into the powerful symbolism of passage, transformation, and discovery. I return to abstraction as the most authentic language of the spiritual. These geometric openings are layered across multiple horizons, sometimes emerging from flat color fields, and at other times set against cloudy or cosmic skies. They evoke alternate dimensions and shifting realities. Each portal invites viewers to move beyond the familiar and step into expansive new realms, encouraging the exploration of inner landscapes.
On a personal level, these geometric “gateway” works reflect intertwined themes of migration, belonging, exile, and becoming. As a Latina immigrant, I create from a place of reclamation, resilience, and renewal. I am entering a period of flourishing creativity rather than enforced invisibility. These portals echo my own transformative journey, marking thresholds, honoring memory, and opening toward possibility.
